Mongolia Countryside Day 2: Kharkhorin

Leaving Khogno Khan, we continue west towards Kharkhorin (Karakorum), stopping at the Elsen Tasarhai sand dunes for a walk.

We stopped for a picnic lunch just off the road and a black kite came by to see if we had anything he'd like for lunch.

When we reached Kharkhorin, we visited the Ergene Zuu Khiid - a Buddhist monastery built from the remains of Chinggis Khan's city of Kharkhorin. There are about 10 temples inside, but earlier there were many more and over a thousand monks lived there until the 1930s.

Passing through the north entrance of Erdene Zuu, we found the site of the old city, but there is very little to be seen on the surface. The museum near the new town was more informative and had some interesting displays, including a plan of the city in its heyday, and information about several Mongol Empires dating from 6th century AD.

We stayed at a tourist ger camp on the edge of Kharkhorin overnight.
