Today Ceira, Bernie and I went eastwards and north of UB, first to the new Chinggis Khan Statue and then on to Terelj National Park with Shiri driving again.
On the way to the Chinggis Khan Statue, we found a man with 2 golden eagles and a black vulture and took photos of them and us.
The statue is enormous, and you can go up inside onto the horse's head to look at the face and out over the countryside. There's a museum inside the base of the monument, and an enormous riding boot and whip. I heard later that you can get your face on one of the warriors which will be added to the memorial.
We then went into Terelj and had lunch in a ger before going for a ride through the park. It was a great experience, though the saddles made a bit of an impression on us! This is a much more forested part of Mongolia, with trees, river and marsh and rock formations, but also a lot more tourists around.
We got back just in time for the Earthwatch meeting - Shiri had to change a tyre on the way back into UB - and had dinner with the Earthwatch folk. Anyway, at 08:30 in the morning we have to be downstairs with all our kit, ready to go to the station for the train to Ikh Nart, so this blog will be quiet for a bit, I suppose...
It all sounds great and your photos are fab! Can't wait till the next installment :)
