Mongolia Countryside Day 5: Khustai National Park and Turkic Stones

We spent the day in the park. Soon after we started we saw some vultures on a carcase, and ten we found another group of takhi, with a foal - this is good, because they are rather slow to breed.

We had hoped to see some deer, but they weren't around. We did find a long row of standing stones and some carved stones of Turkic origin and stopped to take pictures and have a picnic there.

We drove on then, over a high pass which got the car overheated, so we stopped and Zaya and I went for a walk looking at the plants on the hillside above until it cooled down.

The valleys in Khustain National Park are narrower than in most of the places we visited; usually you can see for many miles to a distant range of hills, but in Khustain and around Khogno Khan the valleys are narrower and the rock scenery is spectacular. It looks like good walking country...

Anyway, we rejoined the road into Khustain, followed it back to the main road and a couple of hours later we were back in UB. Back at Zaya's, of course, for a hot shower and a plate of vegetable stir-fry.
